WHERE TO SPLURGE VS. WHERE TO SAVE part 1

The makeup industry is so over saturated these days, it's hard to figure out what products are the real deal, and when you should chose a cheaper counterpart instead. Luckily I've done the work for you!

FOUNDATIONS

SPLURGE:

NARS sheer matte foundation is an amazing liquid that has perfect coverage. It's available in 15 shades, but for $42 / 30ml bottle, you're better off with the "savers counterpart".

SAVE:

Cover Girl's Trublend liquid foundation really surprised me. In the past, I have been unable to find solace in any Cover Girl product, but FINALLY they have made something that I will stand behind! Trublend really is a great foundation that finishes flawlessly. With 13 shades to choose from, this $14 foundation is a steal!

SAVE:

L'Oreal's True Match liquid foundation is my all time favourite "saver foundation". This extremely blendable makeup has a shade that is actually light enough for me (this is a rarity among drugstore foundations), and with a whopping 18 shades to chose from, they are bound to have a shade that is perfect for you too. At about $18 a bottle, this little guy is a saver's must have!

SPLURGE:

Laura Mercier's Oil Free Foundation is nothing short of a miracle. It can be layered to create any look you desire, but one thing's for sure, your skin will look perfect! Since adding the line to Sephora, it's a lot easier to find, (before it was only available in Toronto at Holt Renfrew stores), but like Nars, it will run you about $42 a bottle and is only available in 11 shades.

EYE KOHL :

SPLURGE:

Ask any pro artist what the must have eye kohl is and 9 outta 10 will say M.A.C Smolder... and they're right! This is the very best eyeliner you can buy. End of story.
Eye kohl - $17.50

SAVE:

I know, 20 bucks is a lot to spend on an eyeliner, but it really is worth it. HOWEVER, if you're still not convinced, try Rimmel London's  soft kohl Kajal eye liner in jet black. It's about 10 dollars cheaper and will do the trick without breaking the bank.

BLUSH:

To me, there is nothing better than orgasm.... the NARS blush that is. They realllly perfected that colour, but if $26 seems like a high price to pay for that "just got me some goodies" flushed face, I've got you covered.
Rimmel London saves the day again, with a $4 blush that is as close to orgasm as you're going to get!

The 2 may not look that close in colour by the pictures (and orgasm is a seriously hard one to re create), but you will get the same general look using the rimmel blush, and you'll save $22 to boot, (that's 2 OPI nail polishes btw). A second alternative is L'oreal's "front page peach". No one will know it's not orgasm!

 MASCARA:

SPLURGE:
DIOR show is no doubt a great mascara, but truthfully, I've been able to get the same effect using regular old drug store mascara. It's $23 and is available in 3 colours (black, brown and blue), at Dior counters or Sephora.

SAVE:
Ahhhh Maybelline! You are AWESOME! Pretty much every maybelline mascara I've EVER used is better than %100 of the expensive brands! It is really hard to go wrong with one of these bad boys. I don't care which one you get, they are ALL incredible! I personally buy whichever one is on sale, and have bought one for as low as $2.99. Seriously, this one is a nooo brainer.

CONCEALER WHEELS & PALETTES:

SPLURGE:
MAKEUP FOEVER has 5 different camouflage palettes so that every skin colour can conceal perfectly! Each palette includes 5 concealer colours and correctors and really does the job well. If you have a hard to match skin tone (ie, you don't fit into one of three categories - fair, medium, dark), then this is a really good investment. The price of each palette is $36 and is available at Makeup Forever and Sephora.

SAVE:
NYC colour wheel concealer is almost an exact copy to Lise Watier's, only much MUCH cheaper. The only downside is that your skin tone might not match the palettes colours and therefore end up with patchiness where you're trying to correct.

SAVE:

Rimmel's Hide the Blemish Concealer is super-fab. You just have to be careful that you don't put too much on, or it will begin to crease. I picked it up for $4.99 and use it almost everyday.

SPLURGE:
M.A.C studio finish concealer may look small, but it lasts FOREVER. it also sports an spf 30 and when you finally do run out of it, you can take it "back to MAC" for there recycling program. You are now one step closer to a free lipstick or eyeshadow! SHWING! Studio finish is available in 14 dynamic shades and will run you $20
